[...] Well, I’d better tell you. Before you hear it anywhere else. So remember I was telling you in a previous post a month ago about working with students from the School of Cinema-Television, commenting on their screenplays to be entered for the Sloan Foundation’s fellowships? Here’s a reminder of the Sloan’s statement of purpose in this endeavour: The goal of the film schools program is to influence the next generation of filmmakers to create more realistic and dramatic stories about science and technology and to challenge existing stereotypes about scientists and engineers through the visual media. With Foundation support, prizes are now awarded at six leading film schools to stimulate top students to write and produce new film and television shows about scientists and engineers: American Film Institute ; UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television ; Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama ; Columbia University Film Department ; NYU Tisch School of the Arts ; and USC School of Cinema-Television . In addition to screenwriting and production awards, there are now prizes in animation and a first feature film. [...]

Cheers,

Along with encouraging filmmakers, part of which I learned about from this post, the Sloan Foundation also encourages playwrights. I don't know much about it (and the lure of dinner prevents me from doing a web search to report on it here), but there's a theater in New York that presents something science-connected every year, which the Sloan sponsors in some way, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were grants of some kind too. Clifford's playwright friend, mentioned in the two linked posts, may know more.

I can't say how glad I am that the foundation does these things--and that people like Clifford contribute to making it work.

Thanks for sharing this truly significant story. Science - most definitely - needs more media exposure! The fusion of science into media matters is severely lacking in our society. What a great shot in the arm for science!

Ditto,

The intersection of science (particularly cosmological physics) and entertainment is one of my abiding interests. Hope to have something interesting to report in the near future.

awsome stuff. those are some of my biggest intrests, science and film, i hope to take a film class at RIt, i hear they have some good ones.

its so good to hear that people (people with money) are trying to make science mainstream (in a positive way).
