It's interesting that I should find this page while listening to The Calculus Of Pleasure. I'm also currently reading The Dancing Wu Li Masters, being a complete novice regarding Quantum Theory. After many years I am still hoping to hear the E/O perform live. I was in contact with Russ Gershon recently as we try to drum up some interest for a gig in upstate NY. I had a great time playing their music on my radio show at WAER-FM, Syracuse during 2000-2004.

Sean, are you contemplating a connection between auxiliary scalar fields and dark energy? Or am I simply "over-mining for messages" in your post? Regardless, I hope to live to see the unveiling of dark energy. However, whoever unveils dark energy deserves more than a Dark Energy Suite in a cheap hotel but deserves a Dark Energy Day in the preposterous Universe.

Sure. Just look them up on either allmusic.com or amazon.com; either place gives you (very) short clips of songs.

A sidetrack: Chaz, do I detect a preference for Hendrik Lorentz over Ernest Lawrence in the spelling you used for that quotation? (I.e. "play Hydrogen up to Lorentzium")

Spelling error... or "theoretical prejudice"? Either way, nice catch.

Always glad to hear about a new band. And it's surprising how many people Sean seems to meet who have a connection to math or physics. Maybe I need to get out more.

A couple of years ago, I talked to Roy Wooten (drummer for the Flecktones) about physics after a show. It was defintely one of the weirdest experiences of my life. When he heard I did physics, he took my hand and wouldn't let go. He talked to me and my friend Dan for about 15 minutes about how he was "working with scientists" to invent a new kind of music based on science and math, but we didn't understand most of what he said. He started reciting sequences of numbers to us. He told us about an instrument he invented that could "play Hydrogen up to Lorentzium." At one point he expressed his concern that the government was using microwaves to assassinate people from space. Meanwhile, there were kids eagerly waiting to get his autograph.

I'm not sure whether he actually understood what he was talking about. I was happy for his interest in science, but I never wanted to get AWAY from a musician more in my entire life. :-)
