What Will You Be Doing On The Big Day?

So by now you’ve done all your planning, right? Placed all the orders, sent off the invitations, decorated the house, maybe even decorated a space at your workplace. The more devout among you have even managed to get the day off work, for religious reasons. The just plain weirdly fanatical among you will be setting off to the local park, beach, mountaintop, or desert to do those (possibly) naked rituals involving various baked goods.

Several TV channels may well have specials, hosted by world reknown, er…. celebrities, like Keith Devlin, Simon Singh, and, yes - Carol Vorderman.

Others will host retrospectives of all of the fun things people did in the past in celebration of the Big Day.

What am I talking about?

Why, tomorrow is Pi Day, of course*! (Ok, I made up most of the above….but wouldn’t it be nice?)

(Btw, you have to arrange the date in the way they do it here in the USA, to see it: 3.14)

And don’t forget, at 1.59, you should be doing things like walking around in circles, eating pie, and behaving irrationally. Ok?

(Should that be am or pm… am makes more sense to me, but I guess it won’t be as popular a time…..)

I wonder if Einstein celebrated this day with a birthday pie instead of the traditional cake.

Perhaps. (For those who don’t know…. Pi day is also Einstein’s birthday).

I never knew about Pi-Day until I came across it in the list of selected anniversaries at Wikipedia. So, mathematicians are much more nerdy than I thought. Another way to celebrate Pi-Day would be to find the value of Pi, by hand, upto a million, billion (or any other number your choice) digits.

We should celebrate the (approximate) e-day, too. It could be celebrated either on 27th January at 08:28 am/pm or on 2nd August at 06:28 pm. This, of course, assumes that you are using the correct date format.

Clifford, you’ll be happy to know my lab will be celebrating today at 4:13 pm (best we could think of since the other times were busy, and for some reason nobody wanted to wake up/stay up for the canonical hour of 1:59:26 am, as I used to do in the old days) with homemade apple-pi and blueberry-pi and number-shaped cookies and pi-napple juice.

And this is my ninth year as an observant… er, pi-ous celebrator of this joyous holiday
