Geometry on the Beach

I spotted this last week on Santa Monica beach:
geometry beach
I’ve no idea what’s going on either, but I thought it was rather nice….
geometry beach
I like to imagine that it was an elaborate prank played by mathematically-minded vandals who got access to the giant crane late one night, and moved the containers around……

Clifford, didn’t you see “I, Robot” last year? It’s clearly a used-robot dump!

There is a Belgian architect and artist, Luc Deleu, who is known for his (geometrical) constructions with containers, e.g. this one last year in the Middelheim Open Air Museum near Antwerp. He might have passed by Santa Monica, one jolly morning.

Thanks Michael! I’d vaguely overheard something like that while down there, but now I know for sure…..

I will bet there is some wishful thinking on the part of the LA County Beaches & Harbor folk, as well as the State Park Service, to have some of those containers dumped off the shore to restructure and upgrade the various breakwaters and artificial reefs. Few people know that there are all sorts of cars and trucks and old guns and pipe out past the surf zones all along the bay there to help keep the beaches from eroding and soften the impact of storm surges etc.

They used 8×8.5×40 containers to build the exhibit space for Ashes & Snow in NYC. It was out on a pier, and the containers and drapes made a neat space for a photo and video exhibit.

Maybe someone is putting on a show?
