All I got was this lousy t-shirt

News flash from the SLAC Summer Institute: the t-shirts are in! This is the 34th Summer Institute held at SLAC and this year’s theme is
Gravity in the Quantum World and the Cosmos, as previously dicussed by Sean. The banner for the Institute is really quite catchy (OK, I am biased):

ssi05

The blob on the right is from a painting depicting extra dimensions. The artist is local to the Bay Area and her name, Dawn Meson, dooms her to paint physics themes. The blob is placed on a deep field image from Hubble. Cool, huh!

We put this banner on the conference t-shirts, which just arrived (late) from the vendor. Unfortunately, the silk screener did not have the artistic talent of Dawn Meson, or the person who designed the poster and banner. The extra dimensions blob closely resembles a heart complete with valves sticking out, and the deep field image looks like someone threw spots of bleach on the shirt! We have boxes and boxes of the things too. One can be yours for only $15.

I’m one of the four program directors of the Institute and will tell you more about it in later posts.

Hey - somehow I don’t remember the T-shirt from when I lectured there last year. What was it?

Mark: It was a sort of brown/burnt-orange thing with
three round images on it..one a collider event, one a
star cluster of some kind & the last `The Thinker’, all from the poster. It also said `Nature’s Greatest Puzzles’. I’ll have to examine this years offering to see if JoA is right in her description & see if its worth shelling out 15 bucks.

JoAnne: It’s OK for Extra Dimensions to look like a heart..if your heart is in extra dimensions!

    Hi,
Will the videos be online, as the previous years? I am missing the school here at the IAS Collider Physics school and waiting the for the videos from SLAC.
    thanks!

    Hi Serkan,

The videos are being posted as I type….Sean’s should be up soon!

I enjoy the site, the discussions and the enthusiasm. But, uh, one thing–stay out of sales. I was not motivated to help you move the t-shirts.

    Hi,
are these talks archived as of today? I don’t see them on the summer school
website , but maybe I am not looking at the correct location. if so could
u point me to the correct location?
    Thanks

Shantanu, you can find the lectures at:

    http://www-conf.slac.stanford.edu/ssi/2005/program.htm

    Just click on the title.

Les, don’t worry I was not attempting to sell the shirts on the site - SLAC has rules against such things! It was merely a feeble attempt at a joke.

BTW: amazingly enough the shirts are selling. Sean was caught with one tucked under his arm.

Thanks , Joanne. I actually meant the videos of the lectures. your
message to Serkan (last week) said they were being posted. However
I cannot find them on the link you sent.
